Brass Tacks #175
Despite the fact that Elisabet was born in England*, she never developed a proper English accent, and only seems to slip into a shoddy imitation when nervous.
*She neglects to mention the fact that she grew up in the states.

Henrietta doesn’t get out as often as the other crew members; she’s often needed in the cockpit during heists, just in case they need to make a quick getaway. When she does leave the ship, she certainly makes up for the lost time.

Kieran Von Rosenhart thinks cargo trousers are just fantastic. She can fit them over her mechanical right leg and keep all manner of dangerous things in them- just in case.

Remember the cornish game parts I had last week, reader? Well, they certainly didn’t come out of thin air. I found them inside my little hen I purchased at the market for one purpose, and one purpose only: practicing my brining and roasting skills.
I discovered a lovely recipe from that newfangled “world wide web” (like that will catch on…) for a simple hen brine. It was...

The trouble with Kaeden is that she cannot suffer close-minded self-righteous bigots long enough to engage in civil debate. If she was a more compassionate or understanding person, she could perhaps have made a good, if exciting, life within the Suffragists’ movement. She hates herself a little bit for being unable to push aside her anger for the good of women.

It’s not that the crew of the Sappho aren’t afraid of dying- every gunshot sends blood rushing to their ears and adrenaline through their veins. Every woman on board knows how close they are to death. Maybe that’s why Henrietta doesn’t stop herself from revealing military secrets over the dinner table, and Kaeden parades around port on Elisabet’s arm.
Those living on...

Kieran’s father succumbed to liver failure scant months before Elisabet’s mother died of cancer. This is not a coincidence that two crew members have lost parents; few people choose a life outside the law if they have loved ones to come home to.

The crew of the Sappho might have never heard of Olympus were it not for their captain’s personal connection. Kieran’s favorite cousin is affiliated with the clandestine anti-governmental organization whose members devote themselves to “freeing the citizens of the world from tyranny.”*

kant-be-serious asked: I'm so jealous you guys got to see The Cog is Dead in concert.

Readers, as you may know, I am an adventurous eater of the weird and peculiar. My plate today consists of the heart, liver, and neck of a cornish game hen. Let’s explore!
Oh, and just for posterity’s, I simply sauteed each part in a little oil, onion powder, and soy sauce.
The Heart: Now, I have indulged in turkey heart before and they’ve been gamey, yet surprisingly tender....

The most altruistic act the crew of the Sappho ever performed was actually a favor to Kieran’s cousin, Hermes-22. They landed in South Africa under false papers to pick up their cargo- refugees.
“I don’t care where you take them,” Hermes-22 told them, “so long as it’s safe.”

Kieran hates shadows. Even during tropical summer days you can find her in the most well-lit corner of a room, counting shadows.
It was a relief to everyone when Camille installed a lightbulb in her upgraded clockwork arm.

Kieran tends to speak out loud to her cats. Lazarus is the only one who talks back.
Elisabet's Acoustic Retrospects
The crew’s jaunt to Steampunk Exhibition East was amazing. We met the Airship Isabella, and saw The Cog is Dead, and Abney Park. The Cog is Dead was everything I expected it to be, lovely people, very talented. I got a signed CD from them. Abney Park was fantastic and our captain got all 3 of their CD’s. It was a very successful fun conventional, especially for it’s first year....

Photos will be forthcoming. We hope to see some of you there!

Hidden somewhere in the mountains of the Carolinas there is a station transmitting information on the airwaves (coded, of course) to ships like the Sappho. They broadcast everything from weather patterns to recent police actions.

Great grapefruits, the university has been cracking down recently! A lot of my meals have been strictly on-the-go as of late. One of my favorite snacks of this category are oranges. They’re as much fun to peel as they are to eat, in my opinion. I also make great use of those newfangled plastic containing devices to take my peeled slices of oranges with me at any given moment.
But through...

While Sophie and Elisabet love the weekly murder mystery series, the Sappho’s radio gets real use when the captain uses it to keep track of the bulletins transmitted from the station manned by Sir Alexander’s contacts on the mainland.

Airships like the Sappho rarely have proper weaponry. Nevertheless, significant damage can be done by dropping wine bottles filled with flammable liquid onto their enemies.

Growing up, there were a pair of men who lived on the same floor of Kaeden’s apartment building. They lived together, without any family. It was understood that the two men were not related. Kaeden remembers that no one seemed to mind that the men were in love.
Kaeden wonders what’s changed.

Sturdy footwear is the second most important possession* of any smuggler. Kaeden herself owns four pairs of black leather boots, only two of which are currently falling apart.
*The most important possession is generally a weapon.

It would be too much to ask that the six crew members of the good ship Sappho suspend all communication during heists. Instead, they have devised a complex series of hand signals. Captain Kieran especially enjoyed developing signs for “bugger this” and “we’re utterly screwed”.
