Brass Tacks #157
Elisabet loves the Sappho. Kaeden seems to excel at everything she tries. Ever since the bright-eyes first mate entered Elisabet’s life, the boyish medic has felt at home.

Brass Tacks #156
Kaeden loves the Sappho. Captain Kieran sometimes seems too wild to be real, an irreverent bandit in red and brass, who caught her by the arm and took her to the world where adventures really happen and everything turns out all right.

Kieran loves the Sappho. Camille is entirely unlike any women she’s ever met before. The soot-stained mechanic stomps around in oversized work boots, looking exactly as intimidating and capable as Kieran wishes she could be.

The crew of the Sappho must exercise considerable caution while in port. Kieran must remember which ports allow women into bars, Elisabet must be careful to either wear skirts at certain ports, or take care to pass for a man. Kaeden knows she must lengthen her skirts or else weather the impure affections of men. Henrietta sometimes decides to stay aboard the ship.

Sophie somehow rewrites the adventures of the Sappho in her mind, editing out the most gruesome bits and making herself the hero.

Elisabet McDowell enjoyed several privileges when pretending to be a man. It was then that she was able to cast a ballot for the first time, fraudulent though it was.

It’s an unpleasant shock to reenter society after months aboard the Sappho. Crowds stop and stare at Kieran’s trouser-clad legs, and upright ladies sneer at the length of Kaeden’s skirts.

Sophie's Cabinet of Culinary Curiosities #8
Mandoline Description: A tool used by chefs to cut uniform slices of food. It consists of a flat surface with a blade embedding in the center. There is usually a handle or stand on one end for ease of use. Most mandolines have at least four thickness settings for slicing. Some come with patterned blades for more fancy cuts.  To use, simply run your food back and forth over the blade. The perfect...

Brass Tacks #150
Elisabet’s grandmother was a serious woman whose grey hair was as thick as her Scottish accent. She was an odd old woman, and a bit of a luddite. She would embellish traditional fairy tales as she related them to her grandchildren, adding anti-modernist slants to stories of banshees and kelpies.

Kieran’s favorite thing about the crew of the Sappho is their complete lack of decency. Henrietta, for example, can oft be found wandering the corridors with the top of her flight suit hanging from her hips, with only a camisole to preserve her modesty.

Elisabet assumes a male disguise in order to win the Sappho certain contracts. On one such assignment, it became apparent that she is quite good at darts, even two sheets to the wind. Very useful for intimidating shady businessmen. Not so useful for anything else.

When the Sappho first took flight, Kaeden dressed like a dancer straight from Vaudeville. She’s slowly adopting a more practical style, especially after Elisabet assured her that, no, wearing pants does not make her look like a fourteen year old boy.

Henrietta Winsor Kipling is no longer a member of the military, but her clothing still retains the traces- in her greatcoat, in her medals, in her cap. She was treated a bit like a sideshow attraction during her short career (Come see the amazing Competent Woman! One day only!), so it only seems fitting that she dress like one now.

Sophie's Electronic Journal of Cooking Endeavors...
Readers, I do believe I have made friends with another vegetable: squash. Specifically, zucchini and yellow crookneck squash.  Yesterday I made a squash parmesan and it was absolutely divine! I sliced up my squashes with my brand new mandolin (which, by the way, is one of the most useful tools I’ve ever used in a kitchen) and battered them up in egg and breadcrumbs. After giving each slice...

Kieran Von Rosenhart takes care to bundle up during the cold months; unforgiving metal arms sap what warmth she saves, and the air is chilly above the clouds.

Elisabet says: Lady Lydia Wilshire began stealing, trading and plundering when a local merchant denied her the right to purchase a book on mathematical theories, as he deemed them “too difficult for a woman”.

Sometime between fall and spring Sophie stopped wondering if this port would be the one at which she’d be left. Somewhere between the cargo bay Sophie stowed away in and the kitchen she made her own, Sophie had found a home.

Whenever Sophie needs to traverse the main hallway of the Sappho, she makes sure no one is around, gathers up her skirts, and scrambles over the couch that would otherwise block her way.
